Preparing Children for First Periods Before Fear and Panic

Preparing Children for First Periods Before Fear and Panic

A first period can feel scary if a child does not know what is happening.

Parents can explain periods calmly before they begin, often around ages 8 or 9.

They should say that menstruation is a normal part of growing up and does not mean the child is hurt.

Periods may be irregular at first, and some children have cramps while others do not.

A small kit with pads and spare clothes can help a child feel ready.

Children can also practise asking a trusted teacher or adult for help.

Bathing and normal physical activity are generally safe during periods.

Very severe pain or unusually heavy bleeding may mean the child needs medical advice.

The conversation should continue as the child grows and has new questions.
