Tehran denies ceasefire extension, demands US return to interim deal

Iran and the United States made a special deal in June to stop fighting, but it did not last long.

The American president said the deal was over in July.

Iran says the United States broke the deal first, just two days after it was signed.

A reporter recently asked Iran about making the deal longer, and Iran said there are no talks about that.

Iran says the United States must come back to the deal and promise to follow it.

Some other news reports said the two countries agreed to make the deal longer, but Iran says those reports are not true.

Iran has also closed an important water route for ships called the Strait of Hormuz, where lots of oil travels.

Iran says it will open the route again only if the United States changes how it acts.

Pakistan and Qatar are helping pass messages between the two countries.

The deal was supposed to lead to a bigger agreement about Iran's nuclear program and other issues.
