ABVP demands Bengali language day for two firing victims

ABVP demands Bengali language day for two firing victims

A long time ago, in 2018, students and local people in a town called Islampur were upset because a school hired Urdu teachers instead of Bengali and science teachers.

They gathered to protest outside Darivit High School.

Sadly, during the protest, police opened fire, and two former students named Rajesh Sarkar and Tapas Barman lost their lives.

Many people believe they died while standing up for the Bengali language.

Now, a large student group called ABVP wants the state to remember them every year.

The group has asked that September 20 be celebrated as Paschimbanga Bangla Bhasa Dibas, a special day for the Bengali language.

ABVP leaders held a two-day meeting in a town called Haldia to talk about education and problems students face.

At the end of the meeting, they officially agreed to demand this special day.

They also decided to encourage students to spend less time on phones and screens and more time on sports, creative activities, and playing outside.

That way, the two students who died will never be forgotten.
