SC upholds diploma in pharmacy as minimum qualification for pharmacists
The Supreme Court of India recently made a big decision about who can become a pharmacist in Bihar.
They said that the state government can require people to have a diploma in pharmacy to get the job.
Some people with higher degrees, like BPharma or MPharma, were upset because they couldn't apply.
But the court said the state's rule is fair because it helps them find the most suitable people for the job.
The court also explained that pharmacists are very important in hospitals and clinics, as they help with giving out medicines and taking care of patients.
So, the state can decide what qualifications are needed for this important job.
The Supreme Court upheld the provision mandating a diploma in pharmacy as the minimum qualification for the post of pharmacist in Bihar.
The court dismissed a plea by BPharma/MPharma degree holders who challenged their exclusion due to not holding a diploma in pharmacy.
The state's rationale was based on differences in course structure and limited employment avenues for diploma holders.
The court stated that the state's decision is not arbitrary and it is for the employer to determine the relevancy and suitability of qualifications.
The apex court emphasized the integral role of pharmacists in the public health delivery system.
