States' Capital Expenditure Likely Rose 30% in Q1 Amid Economic Support
Imagine the government is like a big company, and they are spending money on building things like roads and schools.
In the first few months, they spent about 30% more than they did last year.
A bunch of states borrowed a lot more money to pay for these projects.
The government is also giving out interest-free loans to help them.
These loans have already given out a lot more money this year than last year, and they are expected to give out more to speed up the building process.
This spending is meant to help the economy grow, especially because private companies are not investing as much right now.
State governments' capital expenditure likely increased by 30% in April-June.
16 states' capex rose to Rs 95,823 crore in Q1 FY26, up from Rs 73,476 crore the previous year.
These states' borrowings increased 58% year-on-year in Q1 FY26.
The Centre has budgeted Rs 1.5 lakh crore in interest-free capex loans to states.
Disbursement of these loans more than doubled to around Rs 30,000 crore as of July 12, FY26.
