IIT Roorkee Launches India's First Carbon Credit Mechanism
IIT Roorkee has created a new way for farmers to earn money by taking care of the soil.
They will use a special system to measure how much carbon is stored in the soil and turn that into something called carbon credits.
These credits can be sold to companies around the world, and the money will go directly to the farmers.
This project will start in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh.
The idea is to help farmers make more money while also helping the environment.
The system will measure things like how farmers use less tilling, cover crops, manage waste, plant trees, and use better fertilizers.
This will not only help farmers earn more but also make the soil healthier and reduce harmful gases from farming.
IIT Roorkee has developed India's first large-scale carbon credit calibration mechanism to boost farmers' income.
The pilot project will be implemented in the Saharanpur Division of Uttar Pradesh.
The programme uses a Digital Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (DMRV) system to measure and verify carbon credits.
Farmers will earn direct income through the sale of carbon credits to global market players.
The initiative focuses on sustainable practices like minimum tillage, covered cropping, residue management, agroforestry, and improved bio-fertiliser use.
