New Mexico Jury Finds Meta Misled Users About Data

A jury in New Mexico decided that Meta gave people misleading information about how Facebook handled their data.

The case involved claims that Cambridge Analytica obtained information from millions of Facebook users through an outside app.

The state also said Meta did not clearly explain how it handled hate speech and misinformation.

Jurors found 26 of 29 statements identified by the state were misleading.

They did not agree with every claim about Meta’s efforts to remove harmful content and use fact-checking.

A judge will decide the civil penalty.

The state says more than 43 million violations were identified and may seek up to $5,000 for each one.

Meta disagrees with the verdict and says it protects users’ information and free expression.
