Can Pope Leo XIV Remain a US Citizen?
The new Pope, Leo XIV, is from the US, but is also the leader of Vatican City, a separate country.
This makes his situation a bit unusual.
The US government can check if Americans holding important foreign jobs should still be US citizens.
However, it's really hard to take away someone's US citizenship unless they choose to give it up.
So, it's very unlikely that Pope Leo XIV will have to stop being a US citizen.
Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Prevost in Chicago, is the first US-born Pope.
He currently holds dual citizenship in the U.S. and Peru.
The U.S. State Department may review the citizenship of Americans who are foreign heads of state.
Supreme Court ruled Americans can't be stripped of citizenship unless renounced.
It's unlikely Leo will renounce U.S. citizenship and Peruvian law poses no conflict.
