Arabica Harvest Progresses Amid Price Volatility
Farmers in Karnataka are busy picking arabica coffee, a popular and high-quality type of coffee.
However, they are not selling much because the prices have gone down.
This is because the prices of coffee around the world have changed, and there is a better outlook for coffee production in Brazil.
The farmers are also paying higher wages to workers to pick the coffee cherries.
The harvest is going well despite some rain earlier that caused some problems.
The Coffee Board expects a bigger harvest this year compared to last year.
Farmers are hoping for better prices, but for now, they are waiting to sell their coffee.
Arabica coffee harvest is in full swing in Karnataka, with 30-40% of the crop already harvested.
Farmgate prices of arabica parchment have eased to ₹26,000-27,000 per 50-kg bag from a peak of ₹29,000-30,000.
Growers are paying higher labour rates of ₹10-12 per kg for cherry picking due to the current harvest.
The Coffee Board projects a higher arabica output of 1,18,125 tonnes for the 2025-26 season, up from last year's 1,05,700 tonnes.
Growers are holding back on selling their produce due to volatile prices and a lack of demand for robusta coffee.
