Onam 2026: Mahabali’s Annual Homecoming, Rituals and Significance
Onam is a festival connected to the story of King Mahabali, also called Maveli.
People in Kerala remember him as a kind and generous ruler.
Stories say that everyone was happy and treated fairly during his rule.
The gods became worried because Mahabali had become very popular.
Lord Vishnu came to him disguised as Vamana and asked for land covered by three steps.
Vamana used two steps to cover the earth and heavens.
Mahabali offered his own head for the final step and was sent to the netherworld.
He was allowed to visit his people once every year, and Onam celebrates that return with flowers, clean homes and family gatherings.
