Southern States Clash Over Long-Running Water Disputes

Southern States Clash Over Long-Running Water Disputes

Southern Indian states met to discuss problems involving shared rivers and dams.

Amit Shah asked the states to cooperate more closely.

However, the state leaders mainly repeated their long-standing demands.

Kerala wants the Mullaiperiyar dam removed, while Tamil Nadu depends on water from it.

Karnataka wants to build a dam at Mekedatu on the Cauvery River.

Tamil Nadu fears that the project could reduce the water reaching its territory.

The states have also disagreed for years about following court and tribunal decisions.

The meeting showed that solving these water disputes remains difficult.
