Senator Paul Warns 100% Tariff on India Is 'Self-Defeating'

The United States made a new law to pressure Russia.

The law lets the president put huge taxes, called tariffs, of up to 100 percent on countries that buy Russian oil.

Russia sells oil to make money.

America wants Russia to have less money from oil sales.

India buys a lot of oil from Russia.

It is the second-biggest buyer of Russian oil in the world.

A senator named Rand Paul said a big tariff on India would be a bad idea.

He thinks it would make India become friends with Russia and China.

He says the United States needs India as a friend to stand up to China.

The law passed anyway, and now President Donald Trump gets to decide what to do.
