Swiss Population Cap Proposal Gains 48% Support
A group in Switzerland called the People’s Party wants to stop the country’s population from growing beyond 10 million.
They say too many people are moving to Switzerland, which is causing problems like not enough houses and crowded public transport.
A recent survey shows that almost half of the people in Switzerland support this idea.
The government, however, is against it because they think it could hurt the economy.
The People’s Party collected enough signatures to force a vote on this issue, which might happen as early as next June.
If the plan passes, Switzerland might have to change some of its agreements with other countries, like the European Union.
Right now, about a quarter of Switzerland’s residents are from other countries, and some people are worried about this.
A Swiss right-wing party proposes capping the population at 10 million.
48% of Swiss voters support the proposal in a recent poll.
The government opposes the plan, warning of economic damage.
The vote is expected in June 2024, but not yet confirmed.
The proposal could lead to withdrawal from EU free-movement treaties.
