Judge Blocks Trump Deportations Over Pro-Palestinian Speech

A judge in California said the government cannot punish people for expressing certain political opinions.

The case involved foreign students and others who criticized Israel or supported Palestinians.

The government had used immigration rules to cancel visas and start deportation cases.

The Stanford Daily said some student writers became afraid to report on protests and the conflict in the Middle East.

Judge Noel Wise said free speech and freedom of the press are important for everyone, including noncitizens in this case.

She said the government cannot treat speech unfairly because it dislikes the message.

The government agencies involved did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The judge warned that allowing this could eventually threaten many kinds of unpopular opinions.
