Axis Bank Halts Consumer Lending Arm Sale
Axis Bank, which is one of the largest banks in India, was planning to sell a part of its consumer lending arm called Axis Finance.
They started this process last year because of some new rules proposed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
These rules said banks couldn't have businesses that did the same things as their subsidiaries.
However, after many people in the industry complained, the RBI changed the rules.
Now, banks can keep these businesses as long as they keep them separate from their main operations.
Because of these changes, Axis Bank decided to stop the sale.
They think Axis Finance has enough money and doesn't need to sell a part of itself right now.
They will think about it again after they make a new growth plan in April.
Some people also said that the offers they got for the sale weren't good enough, so that's another reason they stopped the sale.
Axis Bank has put on hold the sale of a 20% stake in its consumer lending arm, Axis Finance.
The sale was initiated in response to proposed RBI rules that barred banks from having overlapping businesses with subsidiaries.
The RBI eased these restrictions in December 2025, allowing banks to continue with potentially overlapping non-bank businesses while keeping them separate from main operations.
Axis Bank is reconsidering the sale as Axis Finance is well-capitalized and does not need to raise capital urgently.
The deal was estimated to be worth $350 million to $400 million, with Kedaara Capital being a potential buyer.
