Supreme Court Seeks Measures to Prevent Incidents Like Shoe Hurl at CJI
The Supreme Court of India has asked the government and the lawyers' association to suggest ways to stop incidents like someone trying to throw a shoe at the Chief Justice.
They also want rules for how the media should report such events.
A lawyer named Rakesh Kishore tried to throw a shoe at the then Chief Justice BR Gavai during a court hearing.
The court did not start legal action against the lawyer but asked for suggestions on how to prevent such things in the future.
The Bar Council of India has suspended the lawyer's license.
The Chief Justice at that time, Gavai, remained calm and asked the court officials to ignore the incident.
The Supreme Court asked the Centre and SCBA to suggest measures to prevent incidents like the shoe hurl at former CJI BR Gavai.
The court also requested a standard operating procedure for media reporting on such incidents.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi asked Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and SCBA President Vikas Singh to submit joint suggestions.
The court waived off the procedural formality of issuing a notice to the Centre, stating the issue was non-adversarial.
The Bar Council of India suspended the license of advocate Rakesh Kishore, who attempted to hurl a shoe at ex-CJI Gavai on October 6.
