2.3 Lakh Banking Correspondent Outlets Disappear, Impacting Rural Services
Banking Correspondents (BCs) are like small banking offices in villages that help people with basic banking services.
Recently, a lot of these BCs have closed down, especially in villages.
This is because they don't make enough money to cover their costs.
The RBI, which is like the boss of all banks in India, is looking into this problem.
Without these BCs, many people in villages might have trouble accessing their money or getting government benefits.
The people who run these BCs say the government and banks need to fix the rules to make sure these services can continue.
Total BC outlets declined by 2.30 lakh to 13.10 lakh in FY25 from 15.47 lakh in FY24.
Majority of closures occurred in villages with populations exceeding 2,000.
BCs in urban areas fell from 6.35 lakh in 2020 to 3.09 lakh in 2025.
Sustainability issues due to low commissions and high operating costs for BCs.
RBI is reviewing the BC model and Kisan Credit Card scheme as part of financial inclusion initiatives.
