Nigeria Welcomes U.S. Aid But Demands Sovereignty Respect
Nigeria is saying that it's okay for the United States to help fight against scary rebel groups, but the U.S. has to promise to respect Nigeria's own rules and borders.
This is because the U.S. President, Donald Trump, had said he might send troops and stop sending help to Nigeria.
He was worried that Christians in Nigeria were being hurt and that the Nigerian government wasn't doing enough.
Nigeria's leaders said that isn't true and that they are trying to protect everyone's freedom to believe what they want.
They also pointed out that while some Christians are attacked, most people hurt by these rebel groups are actually Muslims.
The U.S. also put Nigeria on a list of countries they think aren't good at protecting religious freedom.
Some Christians in Nigeria said they would like U.S. help.
Experts mentioned that fighting these rebels is hard because they move around a lot, and Nigeria's government might be needed even if Trump threatened to cut off help.
Nigeria has stated it will welcome U.S. assistance against Islamist insurgents, provided its territorial integrity and sovereignty are respected.
U.S. President Donald Trump had threatened to take 'fast' military action and halt aid to Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians.
Nigeria's presidential advisor, Daniel Bwala, sought to de-escalate tensions, suggesting dialogue between leaders could lead to better outcomes.
While Christians are targeted, analysts and reports indicate that the majority of victims of insurgent violence, such as Boko Haram, are Muslims.
