Article 370 and J&K: The Unkept Promise of Statehood
Imagine a special rule for a place called J&K was changed by the government.
The Supreme Court said the way the rule was changed was wrong, but it was okay for the whole country's rules to apply there.
The government also promised to give J&K its full state status back by a certain date, but they didn't.
People in J&K are upset because they feel the government hasn't kept its word.
The author thinks the Supreme Court should focus on whether the government broke its promise.
The court is scheduled to make a decision on the case in about 8 weeks.
Supreme Court ruled the 'abrogation' of Article 370 was unconstitutional, but application of the Constitution to J&K was valid.
The government promised to restore J&K's statehood by September 30, 2024, but hasn't fulfilled it.
The National Conference (NC) formed the government in the U.T. of Jammu & Kashmir on October 16, 2024.
The NC's lack of vocal demand for statehood may have led the central government to believe it wasn't a priority.
