IRDAI Proposes Clearer Rules for Insurance-Linked Loan Packages
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India may change how loans and insurance are offered together.
Some lenders offer insurance to help repay a loan if certain problems occur.
These problems can include death, disability, or involuntary unemployment.
The proposed rules would allow such packages only when they clearly benefit the borrower.
For example, a borrower might receive a lower interest rate by providing life or property insurance.
Borrowers would be shown the loan rate with and without the insurance.
They could choose an insurer instead of being forced to use the lender’s insurer.
They would also pay the insurance premium separately, while critical-illness cover with home or motor loans would be discouraged because it may be too costly.
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India proposed safeguards for loans bundled with insurance.
Insurance-linked loan packages would be allowed only when they provide a specific, demonstrable customer benefit.
Lenders would have to disclose interest rates with and without the additional insurance security.
Borrowers could choose an insurer independently, rather than being required to use the lender’s insurer.
Insurance premiums would need to be paid separately, while critical-illness cover bundled with home or motor loans would be discouraged.
