Turkey Orders Arrest of 17 Referees, Club President in Betting Probe
Imagine a big soccer game in Turkey.
Some people who help make sure the game is fair, called referees, are in trouble.
Prosecutors in Turkey think some referees and even the boss of a soccer club have been betting on soccer games.
They also think some of these referees might have tried to change the results of games on purpose.
Because of this, the prosecutors have asked for 21 people, including 17 referees, to be arrested.
This is separate from another action where the soccer association already banned many referees for betting.
The head of the soccer association is calling it a 'moral crisis' and says a lot of referees have betting accounts.
Turkish prosecutors ordered the detention of 21 individuals, including 17 referees and an unnamed Super Lig club chairman.
The investigation is related to alleged betting on soccer matches, abuse of duty, and manipulating match results.
A Super Lig club president, a former club owner, and a former association president were also targeted for alleged match-fixing.
Separately, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has suspended 149 officials for betting activities.
The TFF probe found 371 out of 571 active referees have betting accounts, with 152 actively gambling on matches.
