Sikkim Defends Online Tourist Permits Amid Revenue and Data Debate

Sikkim Defends Online Tourist Permits Amid Revenue and Data Debate

Sikkim wants tourists to apply for some travel permits online instead of using paper permits at offices and police posts.

These permits are needed for places such as Nathula Pass and Tsomgo Lake.

The government says the old system may have allowed some tourism money to go uncollected.

Officials found that visitor numbers and recorded permits did not match, although they said the exact loss is not yet known.

The new system would be used by registered Sikkim tour operators.

The government says a private company might help run the technology, but the Tourism Department would keep control.

Critics from the BJP want clear rules about who owns and stores tourist and vehicle data.

The government has also proposed higher permit fees.

The plan still requires more consultations and Cabinet approval before it can begin.
