Scientists Discover Three New Tanzanian Toad Species
Scientists found three new types of toads in Tanzania that are very special.
Unlike most frogs and toads, these new species give birth to tiny baby toads instead of laying eggs that turn into tadpoles first.
This is a rare way of reproducing.
The scientists studied many toad samples and their DNA to figure out that these are actually three different species, not just one as previously thought.
These toads live in small, separate areas, which makes them more at risk.
Sadly, one similar species already went extinct because of a dam and a disease.
The places where these toads live are disappearing fast because of people and climate change, so scientists are worried about their future.
Three new species of toads were discovered in Tanzania that give birth to fully formed baby toads, skipping the tadpole stage.
The new species are Nectophrynoides saliensis, Nectophrynoides luhomeroensis, and Nectophrynoides uhehe.
These toads were identified during a study in the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania.
The discovery reveals that what was thought to be a single widespread species is actually four separate species with smaller, isolated populations.
The habitats of these toads are at risk due to human activities and climate change, with one related species already extinct in the wild.
