India Approves Satellite Spectrum Rules, Clearing Starlink Launch

India has approved rules for companies that want to provide internet using satellites.

Starlink, OneWeb and Reliance Jio may be able to start these services soon.

Before launching, the companies must get spectrum from the government.

They must also build equipment on the ground and pass national security tests.

The spectrum would generally be available for five years.

Companies would pay a charge equal to 5% of their adjusted gross revenue.

The government may offer lower charges for connecting rural and remote places.

This decision is an important step toward nationwide satellite broadband services.
