Supreme Court Rejects Tamil Nadu's Plea Against Mekedatu Project as Premature
Imagine two states, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, are arguing about water from a river called the Cauvery.
Karnataka wants to build a big water storage area called a reservoir at Mekedatu.
Tamil Nadu went to the highest court, the Supreme Court, to stop it.
But the Supreme Court said, 'Not yet, it's too soon to decide.'
They explained that the water experts have only allowed Karnataka to start planning the project by making a detailed report.
The court also said that they, as judges, don't have the special knowledge for these water issues, and that's for the water experts to figure out.
So, Tamil Nadu's complaint was rejected for now, and Karnataka must still follow the court's orders about releasing water.
The final decision on the reservoir will only be made after all the planning is done and the experts give their opinions.
The Supreme Court rejected Tamil Nadu's plea against Karnataka's Mekedatu Balancing Reservoir Project, calling it premature.
The court stated that the Central Water Commission (CWC) has only permitted the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project.
Final approval for the project will only be granted after considering objections from Tamil Nadu and opinions from expert bodies CWRC and CWMA.
The Supreme Court emphasized its lack of expertise in water management, deferring such matters to specialized agencies.
Karnataka is still bound by previous court orders regarding water release and faces contempt risk if it fails to comply.
