Tamil Nadu Third-Child Maternity Leave Plan Sparks Political Debate

Tamil Nadu Third-Child Maternity Leave Plan Sparks Political Debate

Tamil Nadu wants to give women government workers up to one year of maternity leave after having a third child.

Right now, women with fewer than two children can receive one year of leave.

Women who already have two or more children can receive up to 12 weeks.

Some Congress leaders support helping mothers but worry the new rule may encourage families to have a third child.

They also asked whether families have enough resources to support another child.

The DMK said the two-child limit was connected to population control.

The Shiv Sena supported better maternity benefits while saying the government’s reason for the change should be examined.

The proposal has therefore started a political debate about women’s support and family planning.
