Trai fines telecom operators Rs 150 crore for spam calls
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has fined telecom companies Rs 150 crore for not stopping spam calls and messages.
This penalty is for three years starting from 2020.
Trai says the companies did not properly handle customer complaints and did not take action against spammers.
They have disconnected over 21 lakh spammers and blacklisted more than 1 lakh entities.
Trai has also made rules stricter, like making it easier for people to complain and requiring special prefixes for certain types of messages.
The companies are challenging this penalty.
Trai imposed a Rs 150 crore penalty on telecom operators for failing to curb spam calls and messages over three years starting 2020.
The penalty is due to wrong closure of customer complaints and failure to act against spammers' telecom resources.
Trai has disconnected over 21 lakh spammers and blacklisted more than 1 lakh entities in the last year.
New rules include a 7-day window for complaints, action triggered by five complaints in 10 days, and mandatory prefixes for certain messages.
Telecom operators have challenged the Rs 150 crore penalty imposed by Trai.
