Karnataka SIR Faces Deletion Concerns and Voter Verification Confusion

Karnataka SIR Faces Deletion Concerns and Voter Verification Confusion

Karnataka is checking its voter list through a process called a Special Intensive Revision, or SIR.

Many people were removed from the list during the first check because officials classified them as absent, shifted, dead, deleted, or belonging to other categories.

More than 43 lakh people were then asked to provide documents to keep their names.

Officials think 9–11 lakh of them may not get back onto the final list.

Some leaders say this puts too much work on ordinary voters, who must queue with documents.

There are also allegations that large numbers of applications were filed to remove voters in four constituencies.

The Election Commission has asked local officers to verify documents at people’s homes and may let booth officers hear cases.

Political parties disagree about whether the deletion applications show fraud or are simply requests that officials must verify.
