Social Security Emerges as Senate Election Flashpoint Over Benefit Cuts

Social Security Emerges as Senate Election Flashpoint Over Benefit Cuts

Social Security helps pay retirement, disability and survivor benefits.

Its main retirement trust fund is projected to run out of money in 2032.

If lawmakers do nothing, benefits would be limited to the money coming into the program.

The Peterson Foundation describes that change as a 22% benefit reduction.

A survey asked 2,500 voters in five states about the issue.

Most voters said they would prefer candidates who have a plan to prevent cuts.

Many also said lawmakers should act soon instead of delaying.

The issue could matter in Senate races because senators elected in 2026 may still be serving in 2032.
