Manipur Violence Probe: Deadline Extended, Officers Repatriated
The Indian government has given more time to a special group looking into the violence in Manipur that happened in 2023.
This group, led by a former judge, was supposed to finish their report by May 2026.
The violence started because of a disagreement over giving special status to a community.
Many people were hurt and lost their homes.
The government wants to find out what caused the violence and how it could have been prevented.
This is the fourth time the deadline has been extended.
Additionally, two officers who were helping with the investigation have been sent back to Delhi, and Manipur has asked for new officers to continue the work.
The Centre extended the deadline for the Commission of Inquiry to submit its report on Manipur violence to May 20, 2026.
The commission, headed by former Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Ajai Lamba, was formed on June 4, 2023.
The violence, which started on May 3, 2023, resulted in 260 deaths and thousands displaced.
The commission's mandate includes investigating the causes, spread, and administrative lapses related to the violence.
