Andhra Pradesh Restores 34% BC Quota in Local Bodies

Andhra Pradesh Restores 34% BC Quota in Local Bodies

Andhra Pradesh has decided to reserve more local government seats for Backward Classes, or BCs.

BCs will receive 34 percent of seats in village-level local bodies.

They will receive 33.33 percent in towns and cities.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said the decision fulfills a promise made during the 2024 elections.

He said it would give BC communities more chances to take part in governing their areas.

The government also said the earlier reservation level was 24.15 percent.

Naidu blamed the previous government for reducing the quota, although the articles do not include that government’s response.

People will also directly elect mayors and municipal chairpersons.

The Cabinet approved the creation of 28 District Praja Parishads as well.
