Mumbai BMC Begins Property Tax on Slum Commercial Units
The Mumbai government has started charging taxes on businesses operating in slum areas.
Previously, these businesses only paid fees.
Now, over 5,000 businesses, like shops and warehouses, have received tax bills totaling about 7.39 crore rupees.
The government expects to collect a lot more money overall.
The process of identifying all the taxable businesses is still ongoing, but this new tax doesn't mean any illegal buildings are now legal.
