US Lawmaker Proposes Doubling H-1B Visas
A US lawmaker named Raja Krishnamoorthi wants to double the number of H-1B visas, which are special work permits for skilled foreign workers.
Right now, there are only 65,000 regular visas and 20,000 extra for people with advanced US degrees.
Krishnamoorthi thinks this change will help America stay ahead in technology and create more jobs.
Meanwhile, President Trump is making it harder to get these visas by adding a big fee of $100,000 for new workers.
Some groups, like ITServe Alliance, support the idea of more visas because they think it will help America stay competitive.
The new fee starts on September 1, and Trump is also talking about pausing migration from certain countries.
The HIRE Act also aims to invest more in American STEM education to strengthen the domestic workforce.
US Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi reintroduced the HIRE Act to double H-1B visas to 130,000.
Current H-1B cap is 65,000 regular visas plus 20,000 for advanced US degrees.
Trump administration imposed a $100,000 supplemental fee for new H-1B workers starting September 1.
HIRE Act supporters, like ITServe Alliance, believe it will boost US competitiveness.
The HIRE Act also directs funding to STEM programs in US elementary and secondary schools.
