Supreme Court Questions Fresh Polls Over Bengal Voter Deletions

Supreme Court Questions Fresh Polls Over Bengal Voter Deletions

The Trinamool Congress says many voters were removed from West Bengal’s electoral rolls.

It says the number removed was sometimes larger than the winning candidate’s victory margin.

The party argues that these deletions may have changed some election results.

The Supreme Court asked whether it has the power to order new elections for that reason.

The judges also asked whether the affected candidates had filed the required legal challenges.

They wanted to know how many removed voters appealed their deletions.

The court said the issue would be more serious if many removed voters had active appeals.

It plans to look at pending voter-deletion appeals across West Bengal.

The court has not been reported as ordering fresh elections in this hearing.
