Karnataka High Court Recognizes Homemaking, Raises Accident Compensation

Karnataka High Court Recognizes Homemaking, Raises Accident Compensation

A woman was seriously hurt in a road accident and suffered permanent disability.

She had a postgraduate degree and had worked as a guest lecturer before the accident.

The transport corporation argued that she should not be treated as a homemaker because she was highly educated.

The Karnataka High Court disagreed.

It said homemakers can be men or women, and they may also be educated, professionally qualified, or employed.

The court recognized the value of the services she provided to her family.

It used Rs 8,000 per month as her estimated income for calculating compensation.

The court added money for her disability and for the household work she could not do while recovering.

Her total compensation was raised to Rs 6,52,043.
