Indian Markets Extend Seven-Session Slide as Crude Pressures Sentiment
India’s stock market fell for the seventh day in a row.
The Sensex and Nifty, two important market measures, both lost about 0.4%.
Higher oil prices made investors worried because oil can make business costs rise.
Tensions involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz added uncertainty about oil supplies.
The Indian rupee also weakened against the U.S. dollar.
Banks, metals and several other sectors declined, while technology stocks rose slightly.
Analysts said the Nifty may find support around 24,000 points.
Investors were waiting for U.S. Federal Reserve meeting minutes for clues about future interest rates.
The Sensex and Nifty fell about 0.4% on Wednesday, extending losses to seven sessions.
Elevated crude prices, geopolitical tensions, a weaker rupee and higher global bond yields pressured investor sentiment.
Information Technology was the only major sectoral index to rise, gaining 0.51%.
Banks, metals, power and pharmaceuticals were among the sectors weighing on the market.
Analysts identified 24,000 as crucial support for the Nifty and warned of further pressure if it breaks below that level.
