UN Security Council Faces Iran Sanctions Panel Renewal Showdown

UN Security Council Faces Iran Sanctions Panel Renewal Showdown

The United Nations is planning a vote about whether to continue a team that monitors sanctions on Iran.

The vote is expected on September 17.

The team’s current mandate ends on September 26.

France says Iran has not followed some of its nuclear-related United Nations obligations.

Russia and China disagree with continuing the sanctions system and monitoring team.

They say the Security Council no longer has the authority to handle this issue.

The United Kingdom, France and Germany previously used a mechanism to restore sanctions after deciding Iran was not complying with the 2015 nuclear agreement.

Iran says it does not want to build nuclear weapons.

Enriched uranium can be used for peaceful energy or, at higher levels, in a nuclear weapon, which worries the United States and its allies.
