Mira Road Bakri Eid Tensions Stem From Administrative Lapses
In May 2026, people in a Mumbai housing complex had a big argument about goats that were kept there for a Muslim festival called Bakri Eid.
A study by a research group said the fight was not about killing the goats inside the building, but about how the city and the building rules were unclear.
The police had let the goats stay for a while, but later moved them because of fire safety.
The study says the city should make clear rules and give one place to get permission.
Some Hindu groups say the study is wrong and that the goats were being prepared for sacrifice in the building.
The study wants better rules and peace committees to stop fights like this.
CSSS report attributes tensions at Poonam Estate to administrative ambiguity, long‑standing grievances, outside mobilisation and misinformation, not to animal sacrifice.
The dispute centered on temporary housing of goats for Bakri Eid, not on slaughter inside the housing complex, a claim denied by Muslim residents.
Police and MBMC had allowed temporary goat enclosure, later dismantled it for fire safety, relocating about 48 goats to Naya Nagar.
The report calls for clearer regulations, a single‑window permission system, multilingual guidelines, and stronger local peace committees.
Hindu organisations, led by Bajrang Dal’s Gautam Ravaria, reject the findings, claiming preparations for animal sacrifice had taken place.
