Tata Motors and JSW MG seek PMO intervention on CAFE norms
Tata Motors and JSW MG Motor India have asked the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) to review some new rules about car fuel efficiency.
These rules, called CAFE-III norms, might make it easier for some small petrol cars to meet the standards without using cleaner technologies like electric vehicles (EVs).
The companies are worried that this could slow down the shift to EVs and might also make cars less safe because manufacturers might reduce weight at the cost of safety features.
They have already talked to other government offices and met with the transport minister.
They want to explain their concerns in person to the PMO to ensure that the rules support India's goal of cleaner and safer transportation.
Tata Motors and JSW MG Motor India requested PMO intervention to review draft CAFE-III norms.
The norms may dilute focus on EVs and compromise vehicle safety by incentivizing weight reduction.
Companies argue that relaxations for small petrol cars undermine the push for sustainable technologies.
The draft CAFE-III norms were released in September 2025 and will be effective from April 2027 to March 2032.
The companies have previously engaged with the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Ministry of Power, and met with Nitin Gadkari.
