Yavatmal Village Students Study Under Plastic Roof Amid School Demolition
In a small village in Maharashtra, a school lost one of its two classrooms because it was unsafe.
Now, 21 kids and two teachers have to share a single room.
Some kids even sit outside under a plastic sheet and a green net because the inside is too small.
The school is waiting for a new building, but construction hasn’t started yet.
The children keep learning, hoping the rain stays away so they can finish their lessons.
Nine‑year‑old Ruchika Diwalkar and classmates study in a makeshift shelter after one of two school buildings was demolished in March 2025.
The single remaining classroom is used for five grades, with teachers running a multi‑grade schedule and a mid‑day meal kitchen.
Students sometimes have to sit outside under a green net and plastic sheet because the indoor space is too small and unsafe.
A new classroom has been sanctioned (Jan 30 2026) but construction has not yet started; tender process is underway.
The village’s only primary school serves 21 students, with two teachers, and some pupils travel from nearby Salebhati due to lack of a local school.
