India's AI Adoption: Boosting Productivity, Limited Job Losses
Generative AI is a new kind of computer program that can write, draw, and help people do work faster.
A big research group called Goldman Sachs looked at how this AI might change jobs in India.
They found that the AI could do about 9 to 17 percent of the work people do, but only 8 to 12 percent of jobs might be replaced by the AI.
Most jobs, about 42 to 48 percent, will get help from AI so people can focus on more creative or important tasks.
The AI could also make the whole economy a bit faster, adding about 0.4 percent to how much India produces each year.
The biggest help will come in places like hospitals, schools, and banks, where AI can analyze data and give better advice.
The research also said India needs more computer power, electricity, and good internet to use AI everywhere.
Generative AI could automate 9–17% of tasks in India’s non‑agricultural workforce.
Only 8–12% of jobs face substitution risk, while 42–48% are expected to be complemented by AI.
Productivity gains could raise India’s annual labour‑productivity growth by about 0.4 percentage points over the next decade.
Healthcare, education, media, finance and professional services are the sectors most likely to benefit from AI augmentation.
India’s data‑centre capacity is only about 1% of global, highlighting the need for infrastructure investment.
