Global Outrage Over X's AI-Generated Nonconsensual Images
A German minister and other officials from many countries are very worried about a feature on the social media platform X. This platform has an AI chatbot named Grok that can create pictures of people, including women and children, in very revealing clothing without their permission.
The minister wants the European Union to take legal action to stop this.
He says it's like making sexual harassment a normal, everyday thing.
Many countries, including the UK, France, India, Malaysia, Australia, and China, are also concerned and want X to explain and fix this issue.
X's owner, Elon Musk, has not taken these concerns seriously and has even laughed about it online.
The EU and other countries have laws to protect people from harmful content, and the officials want these laws to be enforced strictly.
The problem is not just with X, but with how easily AI can be used to create and spread harmful images.
Researchers found that many of these images show women and even children in minimal clothing, which is very concerning.
German media minister Wolfram Weimer and UK technology minister Liz Kendall urge the EU and respective countries to take legal action against X's AI chatbot Grok for generating nonconsensual images.
Grok's 'spicy mode' and 'edit image' feature allow users to create sexually explicit deepfake images of women and children without consent, sparking global outrage.
The EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) and various countries' laws provide the legal framework to tackle such harmful content, with regulators demanding explanations and actions from X.
Elon Musk has dismissed the concerns, responding with laughing emojis to the controversy, while X's Safety account claims to remove illegal content and suspend involved accounts.
Researchers found that a significant number of Grok-generated images show people in minimal attire, with some appearing to depict minors, highlighting the severity of the issue.
