Supreme Court Cancels Bail, Orders Corporator Back to Jail
Ramesh Mhatre is a local elected representative in Maharashtra.
He was accused of helping attack three doctors at a hospital in Dombivli.
The doctors had advised moving a pregnant woman because no newborn intensive-care beds were available.
Mhatre was first given bail because of health problems.
The Bombay High Court then stopped that bail and sent him back to jail.
Later, the High Court granted him conditional bail, requiring him to stay outside Maharashtra.
The Supreme Court cancelled that bail after saying attacks on medical workers must be strongly discouraged.
Mhatre has pleaded not guilty, and the trial is set to continue.
Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Sukrya Mhatre was arrested after three doctors were allegedly assaulted at a Dombivli municipal hospital on July 6.
A magistrate granted Mhatre bail on medical grounds on July 14, citing his single kidney and other health problems.
The Bombay High Court stayed that order, prompting Mhatre to surrender and return to custody on July 19.
The High Court later granted conditional bail requiring Mhatre and three co-accused to stay in Goa and report weekly to police.
The Supreme Court subsequently cancelled Mhatre’s bail and ordered him to surrender within three days, saying his release could hinder the trial.
