Tata Sons Standoff Pits Trusts Against Management and Regulation

Tata Sons Standoff Pits Trusts Against Management and Regulation

Tata Sons is the company that sits at the center of the Tata Group.

Its board recently faced disagreement over whether N Chandrasekaran should continue as chairman.

The report says Tata Trusts nominee Venu Srinivasan and Noel Tata opposed his reappointment.

Chandrasekaran has been chairman since 2017.

Tata Trusts have traditionally had a strong influence over Tata Sons.

Another issue is that the Reserve Bank of India classified Tata Sons as an Upper Layer NBFC.

This classification may require Tata Sons to list its shares publicly.

The Shapoorji Pallonji Group could also receive about ₹25,000 crore from a proposed share transaction.

Together, these issues have turned a leadership decision into a broader dispute over control, regulation and ownership.
