One-third of states see GST revenue decline in FY26
In the first eight months of the fiscal year 2026, nine out of 24 states and union territories in India saw a decrease in the money they collected from goods and services taxes (GST).
Some of the states that had the biggest drops were Kerala, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh.
Experts say this is because people are buying less and the government cut some tax rates.
Some states, like Haryana and Assam, actually saw big increases in their GST collections.
But overall, it's getting harder for states to collect as much tax as before, and this could make their budgets less stable.
Nine out of 24 states and union territories recorded a decline in GST collections between April and November 2025.
Larger states like Kerala (-4.1%), Odisha (-7.4%), Tamil Nadu (-2.3%), and Madhya Pradesh (-2.7%) saw significant declines.
States with strong manufacturing and logistics activity, like Haryana (22.4%) and Assam (20.7%), outperformed with high growth.
Maharashtra remained the largest contributor to GST collections, adding ₹12,111 crore despite slower growth.
Experts attribute the decline to slowing demand and GST rate cuts implemented from September 2025.
