Income Tax Return Filing Changes for the Upcoming Year
The rules for filing income tax returns are changing this year.
Some of the changes make things easier, especially for small investors who have made money on stocks or mutual funds.
Now, people can make up to ₹1.25 lakh without being taxed and can use a simpler form.
However, everyone will have to report the profits from stocks and mutual funds differently based on when they were sold.
There are new rules for how to handle these profits when selling, too, like a flat 12.5% rate, with different calculations depending on if they were sold before or after July 23rd.
If a company buys back its shares, investors will report that as extra income.
All these changes help make the tax system fairer for everyone.
Changes in ITR forms for assessment year 2025-26 have been released.
Long-term capital gains (LTCG) exemption on listed shares and equity mutual funds increased to ₹1.25 lakh.
Taxpayers with LTCG up to ₹1.25 lakh can file simpler ITR-1 or ITR-4 forms.
ITR-2 requires separate reporting of capital gains before and after July 23, 2024.
Companies no longer pay tax on share buybacks from October 1, 2024; investors report proceeds as deemed dividend.
