Peru Breaks Diplomatic Ties With Mexico Over Asylum
Imagine two countries are like friends.
Peru and Mexico were friends, but Peru decided to stop being friends.
This happened because Mexico offered to give a place to stay (asylum) to a former leader from Peru named Betssy Chavez.
Peru's leaders were upset and said Mexico did something unfriendly.
Betssy Chavez used to work for another former leader of Peru, Pedro Castillo, who was removed from his job and arrested.
Chavez is also facing some legal trouble.
Peru has decided to break off diplomatic relations with Mexico.
The decision follows Mexico's initiation of an asylum process for former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chavez.
Peru's Foreign Minister described Mexico's action as an 'unfriendly act'.
Betssy Chavez served under former President Pedro Castillo, who was removed and arrested in late 2022.
Chavez is also facing criminal charges related to her alleged role in past events.
