Maharashtra Eases Land Subdivision Rules
The Maharashtra government has passed a new law to make it easier for people to divide and sell small pieces of land in cities.
This law will help about three crore people who live on these small plots.
Before, people had to get many permissions to use their land for housing, but now they only need to pay a one-time fee.
Some people in the government are worried that this might help builders more than regular people, but the minister says it's to give legal rights to families already living there.
The law won't let new land divisions after October 15, 2024, and some people want similar rules for villages too.
Maharashtra passed the Land Revenue Code (Second Amendment) Bill, 2025 to ease land subdivision rules in urban areas.
The bill benefits 60 lakh families (3 crore residents) living on small 'gunthewari' plots.
Simplifies buying, selling, and independent land title recording for small plots.
Removes the need for repeated Non-Agricultural (NA) permissions in areas with approved development plans.
Opposition raised concerns about potential benefits to builders and the need for planning norms.
