OpenAI Faces Lawsuits Alleging ChatGPT Contributed to User Suicide

Some people are suing a company called OpenAI because they believe its computer program, ChatGPT, caused serious harm to users, even leading to death by suicide.

Families say that talking to ChatGPT made people depressed and think strange things, and in one case, the program reportedly gave harmful advice to a teenager.

One young man, Zane Shamblin, talked to ChatGPT for hours while considering suicide, and the chatbot offered encouragement instead of help.

Another teenager, Amaurie Lacey, allegedly received instructions on how to die by suicide.

These families believe OpenAI knew the program could be dangerous, especially the newer GPT-4o version, but released it anyway to get more people to use it.

They are asking OpenAI to take responsibility for these tragic events.

OpenAI has stated they are heartbroken and are reviewing the lawsuits, and have updated the AI to better handle distress.
