India Sets Jan 2026 Deadline for Pharma Compliance Amidst Quality Concerns
India makes a lot of medicines for the world, but some cough syrups made in India have been found to be unsafe and caused sickness and even death to children in other countries.
To fix this, India's drug safety agency, called CDSCO, is telling all medicine factories that they must follow very strict safety rules, like those recommended by the World Health Organization.
These rules are like making sure medicines are made in clean places and are tested properly.
Big medicine companies already had to follow these rules by mid-2024.
Now, the CDSCO is giving the smaller medicine factories a final deadline of January 1, 2026, to also follow these rules.
If they don't, they will have to stop making medicines until they can meet the safety standards.
The agency believes this is important to make sure Indian medicines are safe for everyone.
India's drug regulator, CDSCO, has set a strict January 1, 2026 deadline for all pharmaceutical manufacturers to comply with global Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
This directive specifically targets 1,470 smaller pharmaceutical units that had previously received extensions to meet revised Schedule M standards.
Non-compliant units after the deadline will be required to suspend operations until they meet the required GMP standards.
The decision follows multiple international incidents where Indian-made cough syrups were linked to child deaths in various countries.
While larger firms have already complied, smaller companies warn of potential bankruptcy and job losses if they cannot afford the upgrade costs without additional support.
